Postgraduate Award of Proficiency in Assessment for Access Arrangements (PAPAA)
The PAPAA enables professionals to fully meet the requirements set by the Joint Council for Qualifications (JCQ) to assess candidates for access arrangements.
- Postgraduate Course, equivalent to Level 7 on the Regulated Qualifications Framework
- Includes at least 100 hours relating to individual specialist assessment
- Provides a thorough understanding of JCQ regulations and procedures
- Externally moderated and endorsed by the Chartered Institute of Educational Assessors (CIEA)

Allows students to access learning in their own time at their own pace. For students who are also busy teachers, it provides the flexibility that live webinar training does not allow. Taught sessions delivered through online on-demand video presentations, which can be replayed and reviewed.

PAPAA Bespoke


If you are part of an academy chain, a Local Authority or group of schools, we can deliver the PAPAA Hybrid option at a venue of your choice for groups of a minimum of eight students. The remainder of the training will be undertaken through online video presentations.
We can arrange the training for consecutive days or over a longer period if required. We understand the pressures that schools and colleges are under to incorporate CPD into their timetable so we will do our best to meet your specific requirements.

Course Structure
Unit 1
This unit teaches how to select, administer and score tests required for Access Arrangements. It also provides an understanding of statistical terms and psychometric testing.
You will be able to:
- Understand the theoretical basis underlying psychometric testing within Access Arrangement assessments.
- Achieve proficiency in selecting, administering and scoring a range of standardised tests.
- Evaluate the findings of an assessment and recommend and justify appropriate Access Arrangements.
Unit 2
This unit teaches how to understand the Joint Council for Qualifications (JCQ) regulations ‘Access Arrangements and Reasonable Adjustments’, and apply them within a centre.
You will be able to:
- Understand the rational for and impact of Access Arrangements in light of the ethical and privacy issues relating to statutory regulations including the Equalities Act.
- Know how to identify and assess learners who may require Access Arrangements through the interpretation of data provided by the centre.
- Describe Access Arrangements appropriate for particular Candidates.
- Record the evidence and apply for Access Arrangements, through Access Arrangements Online (AAO).
- Be aware of the roles, responsibilities and systems required for the smooth running of the Access Arrangements process within the school/college.
Overview of PAPAA Assignments
The PAPAA assignments include:
- Online multiple choice assessments on the principles of psychometric testing and the JCQ regulations
- Written tasks to demonstrate your knowledge of statistical terms, different types of testing, and calculating standardised scores and confidence bands
- Completing an individual assessment using a range of standardised tests, from creating an assessment plan, writing a case study for the candidate and videoing the assessment, through to marking and scoring the tests, feeding back to the candidate and writing a report of the results
- A short essay on the rationale for the access arrangements process
- Analysing case studies on candidates with learning difficulties, and physical, sensory and medical difficulties
- Recording evidence on the JCQ forms
- Applying for access arrangements using the Access Arrangements Online (AAO) format
Course Authors
The PAPAA course was written and developed by Caroline Read (BA, PGCE, OCR Dipl SpLD, APC) and Sarah Beard (www.dyslexiatraining.net & www.dyslexiaservices.net). Both are experienced dyslexia practitioners who have worked in the field of assessment and access arrangements for many years. Working together they used their individual expertise to design a course which is both practical and underpinned by sound academic principles.
